The Casio WSD – F20 Protrek is an Android smart watch, perfect for those who are on this side of the Apple. The first in the World to use Android 2.0, Casio Smart Watch WSD-F20 Protrek is not just a watch, it is part of an ideology. It is one of the rear cheap smart watches with killer features.
Could it be one of the best cheap smart watches released in 2018?
Let’s find out in this review.
To keep up with the fast pace of the tech world, this new version is not only 0.8 mm thinner than its predecessor, but it is also much more gifted. It has everything you could ever need in a smart watch – barometer, altimeter, activity tracker, dual layer LCD structure, Casio moment setter…you name it.
Its water-resistant, high-quality structure will let you swim or dive up to 50 m (a 5 bar water pressure or 165 feet) without getting damaged.

This younger version of Casio’s smartwatch is a step up from its older brother the WSD-F10, at least in terms of design. Starting with the resin-based case’s diameter (61.7 mm), way thinner than the 1st generation model to the anti-dirt screen, this watch is elegant, yet sporty at the same time – a premium watch for the connoisseurs.
The added top color is a bit more subtle, great news, especially for those who simply detest orange. The dual-layer LCD in the screen has a TFT of 320 x 300 pixels, great for displaying apps, nicely paired with a monochrome one, mainly used to display the time.
While the watch itself is beautiful, it does tend to feel a little bit heavy and large when worn at the wrist. However, considering its many features and the fact that it weighs only 3.2 ounces or about 90 grams we can get past that.
GPS, smart map display and location memory – never get lost again
While its predecessor lacked a GSP feature, much-needed in our opinion, the CASIO Smart Watch WSD-F20 Protrek Smart has one “under the hood”, albeit one that is low-power. This GPS has the option to support positioning data from a few satellites, namely the Japanese ‘Michibiki’ QZSS, the American GPS and the Russian GLONASS. Your current position will be neatly shown on a color map even if you are outside phone signal range. Pretty cool, and actually way better than some models that basically become average watches with not having access to phone/ radio signal.
Personalized map management
Paired with the GPS, the full-colored map will accurately display your position at a particular moment. You will be able to display any possible route related to your daily outdoor activities.
While other features are pretty awesome, this one is a bit of a drag in our opinion. It lets you enter stalker mode with enabling you to see every single connected friend’s position on the map. Being marketed as ‘connecting, gathering and spreading fun among friends’, this feature will let you access this info even on the move.
Tool – everything you need in one place
This tool, or complete box of tools in our opinion, lets you access every essential bit of info, at least regarding outdoor activities. It’s quite easy to use – press the ‘tool’ button and have instant access to many perks along the lines of a barometer, an altimeter, a compass and many other useful things.
Always be one step ahead thanks to the easy process of checking climatic conditions, natural phenomena and everything along the lines. All of this turns Casio Smart Watch WSD-F20 Protrek into a multi-sports coach. And while trekking, cycling, and skiing are something most cheap smart watches can track, this Casio model comes with the addition of swimming and fishing.
Being water-resistant up to 50 m in-depth, 165 feet or 5 bar water pressure, the same thing really, this smart watch can offer a plethora of interesting facts and tips in regards to fishing – Want to know where and when to find the best catch? No problem.
As the CASIO Smart Watch WSD-F20 Protrek Smart is more of an outdoor smart watch, it might be a bit hard for not so sporty people to use it. While it can beautifully track your performance, calendars, daily planners and message apps are not that ‘highlighted’ – you might find them pretty hard to find/ use.
Keep in mind that if you are a regular office-oriented consumer, who’s only activity is to get up and go for coffee, this might not be the best option for you. Otherwise, the soft does react quite quickly. The long life of the incorporated battery is also something outdoor lovers will appreciate, as it does tend to last somewhere around 25 hours and this is the GPS on mode. As a boring timepiece, it will actually last you up to a month.
Not bad…not bad at all.
The CASIO Smart Watch WSD-F20 Protrek Smart is a pretty cool outdoor watch. Sure, the orange part of the case might not be for everyone, but it is more subtle than that of the WSD-F10 and you can also opt for the all-black model, much as we did. However, it is hard to make a functional smart watch that can track so many things at once, and this is why the F20 is very cool.
Definitely not marketed towards the e-mail reading, calendar planning average consumer, the WSD-F20 has a lot of perks for the athlete in you. What is perhaps its best feature is the GPS that actually works both in & off range. This might have something to do with the 3 international satellites it can connect to, American, Japanese and Russian.
All in all, we find the new smart Casio to be very responsive and full of advanced features. While it might be a bit expensive, we think it is a good investment for the sportier types. This is why it has landed the best Android smart watch of title.-
